Fresh Fruits & Vegetables For Acne

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

We all know the benefits of eating fruits and vegetables. They contain vitamins, minerals, fiber, and other nutrients to keep our bodies running in peak condition. Study after study shows that people who consume the most fruits and veggies are less at risk for a host of illnesses, including heart disease and cancer. The best fruits and vegetables to eat are the ones grown locally and seasonally. Doing this saves money, protects the planet, and pleases your palate.

Crops are more bountiful during their natural harvest times, and your pocketbook benefits from the surplus. Plus, if you buy locally, you won’t incur the costs of the food being transported to your store, and the planet won’t incur the costs of fossil fuels being burned to ship that food. But even if money was no object and global warming weren’t an issue, the best reason to eat locally and seasonally is taste. I love eating fresh fruit and vegetables from my garden. It tastes better that produce you can buy at the store, and when I have grown the produce myself I feel a sense of accomplishment. I love the summer and autumn months when I can eat straight from my garden. I feel good and my pocket book thanks me for spending less at the supermarket.

Natural Acne Treatments

According to Dr. Roberta Palestine, who did her residency at the May Clinic Dermatology Department, natural cosmetics are not always better, and synthetic products are not always worse. According to this doctor, much of the natural cosmetic fad is just promotional hype. Often times people are allergic to natural products, so what is important is to learn your skin type and then find products based on that. If you are prone to acne breakouts, learn to read the labels and use a good antibacterial cleanser. If your skin is older, use a product with moisturizing ingredients.
Another thing to remember is that hypo allergenic does not mean that it will prevent breakouts or acne; it just means that the product is free of allergy causing ingredients.
“Many so-called natural products use exotic ingredients, but they are really functioning as high-priced moisturizers,” says Palestine. There are many fine humectants, the ingredients that bind water to skin, in products at all price ranges. Common humectants you might find include: glycerin; maltitol syrup; mannitol; propylene glycol and sorbitol. Just because a product is higher priced, does not necessarily mean that it is better. She also advices that women adjust their skin care to the weather. Using a heavier cream in the winter will protect your skin from the elements. Lighter lotions in summer will keep you moisturized without feeling weighed down.

Detoxing To Fight Acne

Most of us know that drinking water is good for us. Most of us know that it will help keep your body balanced and can help keep your body functioning properly. But did you know that drinking enough water can actually help keep your skin clear? While water alone is not the answer to all your acne problems, it can help rid your body of toxins that would otherwise build up in your system and could result in breakouts.

So how much water should you be drinking? The conventional answer to that question is six to eight glasses a day. But ever person is different, so what is best for one person may not be right for you. There is also the fact that you can over drink water, which will result in flushing electrolytes from your body; most people will not get to that point, but it is worth noting just to keep in mind.

So if you are not drinking enough water, now would be a good time to start. Adding a few extra glasses to your diet each day, along with cleansers and a healthy diet will put you well on your way to having cleaner clearer skin in no time.

Homemade Acne Masks

If you want to zap zits, there are a few things that you might not expect in your search to be effective.  We’ve all heard about toothpaste.  But frankly it just reduces the inflammation and then leaves damaged, red skin cells behind to make it look ugly anyway.  You can cover it up with makeup, but it’s not exactly making the zit go away to say the least.  But instead, you can try some other methods.

First of all, you could try putting strawberries or a mixed strawberry mask on your face and let it dry. This will nourish your skin in general and it works great to deal with acne problems.  Second, you can try salt.  It gets rid of excess oils, fights infection in some ways, and it exfoliates if you use it as a scrub.  Third, you can use a tomato or lemon cut in half and spread it across your face.  Egg whites can also be most effective in improving the skin in general, and likewise, garlic cloves can be crushed to make a paste and put on the infected areas.  All of these are easy things that you can find in your kitchen to treat your acne problems.
